15×22″ charcoal on Rives BFK
When researching this tree, as I was drawing the second in my shadow series, I learned that the Gingko dates back to the dinosaur era, that is why I named it Survivor. I found this specimen at Descanso Gardens, and the way the light highlighted the one stem, fascinated me. Such distinctive leaves, it is recognizable almost to all that see this.
I played with the depth within the shadow of the left side. Keeping the abstract quality, yet offering some values to keep the interest. Pushing and pulling at this stage. Stepping back quite often to keep the overall composition in perspective.
I just love the natural qualities of charcoal.
Fitting for these images, don’t you think?
